South Africa is about to administer its first COVID-19 vaccines. Some say that there have been unnecessary delays, whilst others say that the delays could have assisted us to better select more appropriate options for our country. In the meantime, countries such as the UK, Brazil and South Africa have experienced variants of the virus which are more contagious and have in some respects required the need to revisit our vaccine options in South Africa. Many other questions remain.


Experts Professor Barry Schoub, Dr. D. Kontogeorgis and Dr. S. Nicolaou will unpack all of these issues and others such as the safety and efficacy of vaccines and when they are likely to become available for you, in a discussion moderated by Eleni Giokos, a CNN Correspondent.

MB BCh, MMed , MD, DSc, FRC Path, FCPath, FRSSAf, MASSAf , Emeritus Professor of Virology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and, as founding Director of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa, was, amongst many awards, presented with the Order of Mapungubwe (silver), the country’s highest civilian award, for services to science both nationally and internationally.

  • Dr. Dimitri Kontogeorgis

Emergency Medicine Consultant, Associate Clinical Lead at the University Department of Emergency Medicine Royal Berkshire Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, Reading United Kingdom.

  • Dr. Stravos Nicolaou

Aspen Pharmacare Group’s Senior Executive responsible for Strategic Trade Development. He was previously CEO of Aspen’s export business, a member of Business for South Africa (B4SA) Steering Committee and Chairperson of the B4SA Health Workgroup. The Chairman of the Public Health Enhancement Fund (PHEF) – a joint collaboration between the Private Health Sector and the Minister of Health. Recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science in Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand.
